Earlier this month, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing, The Federal Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. During the hearing, Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA), said that “[a] tenant screening system called Safe Rent was accused of violating their Fair Housing Act — the Fair Housing Act because their AI algorithm, disproportionately, scored Black and Hispanic renters lower than White applicants. Most of this technology is still so new and needs time to be vetted and improved.” There was no additional discussion about tenant screening and AI at that hearing.
