On December 7th,2022, We Gave Back to the Laredo Community.

Sarma Charitable Foundation (SCF) donated $75,000.00 to Laredo Habitat for Humanity.

By sponsoring to build a home, an opportunity to change the lives of a deserving family.

The sponsorship of this home has a large significance to Sarma employees Bob Benavides – President/CEO, and Rosalia Leyendecker – Client Specialist, and Sarma Board Member Diana Bonnin, as they all grew up as friends in Laredo and went to J. W. Nixon High School (81’and 83’) together.

Sarma President and CEO, Bob Benavides stated, “Being able to give back to where it all started for us was a life long dream, and breaking ground on this day, December 7th (My dad’s heavenly birthday), made it extra special for my family.”

The funds donated will be used to help build an accessible home for the Almanzan family – Juan (49) and his mother, San Juana (74) – Both family members are disabled.

The home they were living in had a roof that was destroyed with large gaping holes throughout the structure. Plumbing and gas lines were not repairable and there was cause for concern that the entire structure might fall. They were sleeping in the front of the home, the only room with a wooden ceiling that provided shelter from the rain; she was sleeping in a recliner chair and he slept on a sofa. The house needed to be demolished.

Carol Sherwood , Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, said, “Without Bob and Sarma’s contribution, we could not even begin the process of building this family a safe and accessible home. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Bob, Rosalia, Diana and Sarma Charitable Foundation.
